Sculptural Early Dutch Colonial Chaise Longue in Wood and Hand Woven Cane 1920s

€5,900.00

It is not often you come across a piece this sculptural. Just look at it!

This Dutch colonial chaise longue from the 1920s is a stunning piece of furniture. The great length (206 cm) and wavy shape create a true statement piece. Dating back to the 1920s - it was made by the grandfather of the person we bought if from - this is a genuine antique piece with a very interesting history.

This chaise longue was made in what we now call Indonesia. At the time this country was a Dutch colony and called Nederlands-Indië. The colonial times of course carry rather dark and sad stories - yet from a historic point of view this period also is an important part of the history of The Netherlands. The cultural influences flowing both sides created some wonderful art, architecture, literature and furniture. For example, this stunning chaise longue.

Although we now consider this lounge chair a work of art, it obviously wasn’t supposed to be when it was made - the sculptural element to it mainly comes from this being a very good and comfortable ergonomic design. Overall the base shape of the chair is just wonderful, but there are all sorts of other beautiful details - like the very elegant feet up front, the curvy feet at the back and the patterns in the hand woven cane webbing. This material is light and airy - great to lay on in warmer climates - and also carries a very elegant and exotic appearance.

This chaise longue has been in only one family for the whole of its life and it was loved and cared for. It comes in a very good and original condition with only minor signs of age and use - and is ready to be loved again.

Dimensions: W. 206 x H. 87 x D. 67
