Wonderful Antique Bas Relief Fireplace Surround in Hand Carved Stone

€14,500.00

This fireplace surround in carved stone is truly one of the best things we’ve seen. Dating back to the late 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, it shows real craftsmanship and attention to detail. The intricately carved scene visible at the front of the surround features a rural or farmers scene with people working on the land. It is a piece of high artistic value.

The craftsmanship showcases a deep appreciation for pastoral life, with various figures engaged in traditional agricultural activities. On the left side, the carvings depict farmers with a sickle harvesting crops, capturing the hard work and dedication of rural life. The right side continues the narrative with scenes of farmers tending to animals and gathering fruits. One figure is shown with a bundle of produce, while another interacts with livestock.

The arch itself is framed by intricate foliage, adding a naturalistic element that enhances the rural theme. The stone's texture and weathering give the piece a wonderful patina.

It is coming from a large city mansion in Ghent, Belgium - but for as far as we can tell it was never really used, just stored. Would be a great and unique rustic piece of architectural history in any new built or renovated home.

It comes in a good antique condition with signs of wear and a desirable patina.

Dimensions: W. 119  x D. 20 x H. 78 cm
